Signing: All Gone!

We've been working with Noah on several signs for quite a while now and although we know that he understands most of them, he exhibited his expertise on one just in the last couple of weeks.  This was just after we finished our sensory rice activity:

Sensory Activity: Rice

I found this activity online and knew Noah would LOVE it!

Not only is the rice texturally fun, but it sure is fun to throw too!

Funny enough - Sandy tried to eat our project!

Hand, Foot and Mouth Virus

Noah started running a fever yesterday that only escalated to 102.1 and has remained consistent throughout the day today.  Even with Tylenol, it only abated the fever to just under 100 degrees.
Took him to the pediatrician and found out that he has Hand, Foot and Mouth. Fun!  Viral, so no antibiotics.  Just a concoction of Tylenol and Motrin and then Maalox and Benadryl!
Ulcers all down his throat, he hasn’t eaten in 2 days and cries constantly.
Bless his little heart!
Sorry for the quality of the pictures. These were taken on my camera.  You can see how miserable little man is.

Makin' and Playin' with Homemade Play-Doh

Last week Noah and I made Salt Dough to play with.
Warning: You WILL learn of every little cut on your hand, visible or not!
We had a lot of fun mixing up the ingredients and playing with it, but not so much in trying to eat it!  Let’s just say….gag reflex!
I’ve been wanting to do some sensory activities with Noah and this just seemed to be the perfect way to start!

Simple Steps for a Greener Lifestyle - Start Recycling

By: Your Green Helper

Trying to be a little greener in 2011? I know this is a popular New Year’s resolution for many people. I also realize making changes towards a greener lifestyle can be intimidating. I often get asked where to start. My recommendation is to focus on making one small change at time. This will ease the feeling of being overwhelmed and help ensure your family does not retaliate against your efforts. This year I will be sharing simple steps you can implement to help you succeed on your eco-friendly journey.

Simple Steps for a Greener Lifestyle – Start a Recycling Plan in your Household

If you are completely new to the concept of recycling, I would recommend first checking with your trash company to see if they offer recycling service. Most now offer curbside pickup for recycling. Our company does charge an additional $2 per month for the service. However, they do not require us to sort our recycling which is a huge time saver for us. The only thing they do not pick up is glass.

You can also check to see if there are any community drop off sites in your area. Most landfills now have a recycling center. However, they may charge you to drop off your recycling. Check out your local schools as well. Some have a recycling drop off site to help earn money to support the school.

Again, I recommend starting with smaller steps and ease your way into a fully committed recycling plan. Start off your first week by only recycling cardboard. You will be amazed at how many boxes you will go through in a week. Once you are in the habit of recycling your cardboard, then you can add in plastics and so forth.

Here are some great tips to get you started….

Break down your cardboard, even the small tea boxes. This will save space in your recycling bin and help out down the recycling line.

Collect newspapers in a paper grocery bag or in tied bundles, depending on your community’s guidelines, and set them out on pickup day.

Don’t recycle wet cardboard. It can clog sorting machines. Throw it away to keep it from contaminating the rest of the load.

Don’t recycle bottle tops; they’re not made from the same plastic as recyclable bottles. But if you forget, don’t sweat it. They’ll be sorted down the line.

Rinse cans, but crushing isn’t necessary. The aluminum can is the most recycled item in the United States, as well as the most valuable. It can be recycled again and again and so efficiently that a can is regenerated and back on the shelf in as little as 60 days.

Don’t fret if you can’t get the lime out of the beer bottle or the last of the peanut butter from the jar. The recycler’s machinery will zap all contaminants. But do empty and rinse glass jars and containers.

Noah (Of Old Testament Fame) Gets on the Eco-bandwagon...

...Purchases $160 million Environmentally Friendly Ark

ark 300x187 Noah (Of Old Testement Fame) Gets on the Eco bandwagon, Purchases $160 million Environmentally Friendly Ark
The Ark Encounter
In much of the developed world, businesses “going Green” has certainly become a universal trend.  Having said that, I still did not see this one coming.
Answers in Genesis, an organization famous for its  “Creation Museum” in Petersburg, Kentucky, has announced their next project – A theme park revolved around the Biblical story of Noah’s ark.
Aptly named “The Ark Encounter”,  the 160-acre complex will feature a full-scale replica of Noah’s Ark.  On top of that, it will feature a walled city, animal shows, a replica of the Tower of Babel, a 500-seat special effects theater, an aviary, a journey through biblical history, and a first-century Middle Eastern village.
What’s most interesting about the $150 million project, is that it’s going to be “green”.
The building planners are slated to utilize ‘Leader in Energy and Environmental Design‘ (LEED) building techniques throughout the entire park.  In addition to this, they plan to utilize all major renewable energy sources to power the massive park including solar, geothermal, hydro, and wind energy.
Much of the cost of the park is expected to be covered by public donations made through the Answers in Genesis website, but also through Kentucky’s tourism development laws, which will allow them to recover up to 25% of the project costs.
State Rep. Royce Adams, D-Dry Ridge, quoted by MSNBC and Cincinnati Enquirer, said Ark Encounter will provide a,
once-in-a-lifetime economic boost…This project will do two things for our community: It will add 900 permanent jobs at a time when they are extremely hard to come by, and it will become a worldwide beacon for those who share our faith.
The park is projected to attract at least 1.6 million visitors a year while bringing over 900 jobs toNorthern Kentucky, which is how the state is justifying its questionable endorsement of the project.
Grant County Judge-executive Darrell Link said, “With every ark there is a rainbow and at the end of this rainbow is a pot of gold.”
Source: MSNBC
What was once thought impossible, has become reality. The spread of creationist propaganda has oxymoronically merged with popular environmentalism- a movement based on a worldview that staunchly contradicts that of the typical creationist. Who would have thought we’d find a solar powered Ark? Or a geothermally heated Tower of Babel?
What happens next in this truly bizarre convergence of conflicting ideologies?
God only knows!

Big G Whole Grain Cereal Prize Pack Giveaway

According to the 2010 Report of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, only five percent of Americans get the three full recommended daily servings – a shocking statistic.

With many Americans making New Year’s Resolutions to live healthier, it’s never been easier to get the whole grain you want without sacrificing taste. Every Big G cereal contains at least 8 grams of whole grain per serving, with more than 20 General Mills cereals delivering 16 grams or more. (At least 48 grams of whole grain are recommended daily.) Big G cereals are America’s number one source of whole grain at breakfast, providing America with more whole grain at breakfast than any other breakfast food from any other manufacturer.

Only whole grain gives you the vital nutrients from the complete grain. The health benefits of whole grains can’t be pinpointed to one particular component of the grain. It’s the “whole grain package” that makes the difference. In addition to fiber, whole grain contains antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other vital nutrients that help ensure a healthy diet. A diet high in whole grain has been found to help with diabetes and weight management, and it may help reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers.

Get into the whole grain habit by just looking for the big white check on Big G cereals! Cereal is already one of the healthiest breakfast choices you can make, and the entire Big G cereal line is made with whole grain, making it a great choice. Big G cereals have the brands and flavor your family will love, including Cheerios®, Lucky Charms®, Cinnamon Toast Crunch®, Honey Nut Cheerios®, Fiber One® and Total®.

To be sure the other foods you are choosing have the healthy whole grain you need, just follow these two easy rules:
  1. Look for a whole grain symbol like the big white check on Big G cereals or the Whole Grain Stamp developed by the Whole Grains Council
  2. Scan the ingredient list and choose foods that list a whole grain near the top of the list
Visit for more tips, additional information about the benefits of Whole Grain and how Big G cereals can be a convenient and tasty way to incorporate more whole grain into your day.

I had the opportunity to receive a prize pack to help fulfill my healthy living goals, including a VIP coupon for one Big G cereal, a cereal on-the-go bowl, lunch bag, walking enthusiast kit and a digital jump rope.

I love Honey Nut Cheerios and that is what I purchased with my coupon.  Being newly pregnant, I really need to refocus on my health! This is a great jump start!
