Chipkos was founded on the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to contribute towards a better future. Whether you are a once a month recycler or a full-time environmentalist, Chipkos gives you a wearable badge to express your support for nature conservation, and take a proactive step toward a greener tomorrow.
They aim to inspire trends that represent guardianship of nature. Their mission is to utilize our products as a vehicle to truly make a positive impact in the world, and to bring people together in support of a common cause.
Products: Chipkos Original sandals are made from low impact, environmentally friendly materials including recycled EVA material for the outsoles and midsoles, sustainable jute fibre foot beds, and non-toxic water based adhesives.
Packaging: They use 100% recycled materials for our product tags instead of virgin cardboard. They’ve also opted against disposable shoe boxes, and instead protect their sandals in an eco-friendly and reusable jute shoe bag.
Shipping: Chipkos participates in a carbon offset program. For each pair bought, Chipkos makes an offset donation to ensure that the shipping of your Chipkos Originals is entirely carbon neutral.
The Stand for Square Feet
Guanacaste, Costa Rica has one of the rarest climate conditions on the planet. It is also one of the most threatened tropical habitats on Earth. The rain forest there has both wet and dry seasons. The dry lowland makes this forest especially vulnerable to deforestation. Guanacaste is teeming with life, harboring all kinds of exotic animals such as jaguars, howler monkeys, and even Costa Rican sea turtles.
In addition to actually protecting the rain forest land, Chipkos is a firm believer in creating a sustainable living environment for local Costa Rican residents. A portion of Chipkos donations goes towards hiring local community members to be park rangers, staff and educators of Guanacaste. Area De Conservacion is an entirely resident Costa Rican staff recruited from rural surrounding areas and the capital of Costa Rica, San Jose. By paying fair wages to local residents, Chipkos is offering alternative income producing opportunities that work with the environment, instead of against it.
Chipkos funds efforts to educate the children of Costa Rica on the importance of maintaining fragile ecosystems throughout the world. Every 5th grader living within 50 miles of Guanacaste has been visited by an educator to talk about conservation and biodiversity. Chipkos believes that every child is a natural conservationist, and that by educating our children on the importance of conservation, we are protecting our shared future by instilling a deep commitment to conservation, as well as a sense of respect for and admiration of our world's natural resources.
Rain forests are a carbon sink, storing enormous amounts of toxic carbon in the steamy depths of tropical foliage. Deforestation releases those gases into the atmosphere, affecting human health as much as the entire transportation sector put together. Reducing deforestation is a vital element towards curbing global warming, and protecting the health of local Costa Rican residents as well as people throughout the world.
For each pair of sandals you buy, Chipkos will adopt 100 square feet of the rain forest for the protection and preservation of land, species and natural resources. 100% of the Chipkos sandal donation is given to their partner, SaveNature.org. SaveNature.Org is a non-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to preserving fragile ecosystems by providing opportunities for personal, direct action to protect natural habitats around the world.
I must say that this is a small price to pay for a huge environmental undertaking!
